Celebrating the life of JoAnne M. Jorgenson.

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson, a respected citizen and outstanding public servant for the Fairfax County Health Department for 38 years, died on January 9, 2010; and

WHEREAS, during her distinguished career, JoAnne M. Jorgenson ably served the citizens of Fairfax County as assistant director of Nursing, director of Patient Care Services, and finally, as the deputy director of Health Services for the Fairfax County Health Department; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson was a leader in the public health community, diligently and earnestly promoting local and regional efforts to protect the health and improve the quality of life for all citizens; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson worked tirelessly and effectively to bring primary care to uninsured families and individuals through Fairfax County’s Community Health Care Network and to build and maintain a health care safety net in the county; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson was a founding member, an organizer, and the driving force of the Northern Virginia Access to Health Care Consortium; she worked hard to ensure that the initial meeting was held in 1996; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson helped institute the Strategic Planning and Total Quality Improvement programs to enhance the ability of the Fairfax County Health Department to meet the community’s growing and changing health care needs; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson generously gave her time and expertise to many civic organizations, including the Northern Virginia HIV Consortium, established in 1988, the first HIV consortium formed in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson was recognized statewide as an innovator in the field of public health nursing, and she was honored as both Fairfax County Nurse of the Year and Virginia Nurse of the Year; and

WHEREAS, throughout her career, JoAnne Jorgenson was an inspiration and mentor to numerous health professionals, helping shape their commitment to service and public health; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson provided invaluable assistance to the community by generously lending her support, understanding, experience, balanced perspective, and wise counsel; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly honor the life and career of JoAnne M. Jorgenson, her service to the citizens of Fairfax County, and her many contributions to public health in the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of JoAnne M. Jorgenson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
