WHEREAS, Terry Alford, Ph.D., Professor of History at the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), is the distinguished recipient of a 2010 Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award, the Commonwealth's highest honor for faculty members of public and private colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, on February 18, 2010, Governor Robert F. McDonnell announced the recipients of the Outstanding Faculty Award (OFA), which annually recognizes educators of higher learning who demonstrate superior accomplishments and excellence in teaching, research, and public service; and

WHEREAS, celebrating its 24th year, the annual OFA was created by the General Assembly and the Governor in 1986 and the program is administered by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and sponsored by Dominion Resources; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Terry Alford completed a doctoral degree in history from Mississippi State University, studied family history at the University of California at Davis, and is a nationally acclaimed scholar on John Wilkes Booth and the Lincoln assassination; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Terry Alford joined the NOVA faculty in 1972, and he teaches history with passion, humor, and an innate ability to “illuminate historical significance through exploring the lives of individual persons”; and

WHEREAS, with a vast knowledge and love of history, Dr. Terry Alford teaches survey courses in United States history and teaches 19th century American history to honors students; he was the driving force behind the creation and success of NOVA’s Honors Program; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Terry Alford is the celebrated author of Prince Among Slaves, an award-winning book that tells the story of an African royal prince enslaved in the antebellum South, which was the basis of a PBS documentary in 2008; and

WHEREAS, committed to providing the best education possible for NOVA students, Dr. Terry Alford generously gives his time and expertise to many education organizations, including as a founding member and director of the Northern Virginia Review, as an elected member of the Campus Council and the College Senate, and as the longtime chair of the Leonard J. Mills Memorial Lecture Series and the Annandale Campus Lyceum Committee; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Terry Alford has received many awards and accolades for his many contributions to education, including teaching awards from the NOVA Educational Foundation, the Student Government Association, and the Alumni Federation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Terry Alford, Ph.D., on his well-deserved recognition as a recipient of a 2010 Outstanding Faculty Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Terry Alford, Ph.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his many accomplishments and gratitude for his commitment to quality higher education in the Commonwealth.
