2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Alan Cantrell, the outstanding Floyd County High School girls’ basketball coach, has announced his retirement at the end of the 2009 - 2010 season; and
WHEREAS, Alan Cantrell began his remarkable head coaching career at Whitewood High School in Buchanan County and also coached at Tazewell and Pound High Schools; he worked at Floyd County High School from 1981 to 1984 before returning in 1990; and
WHEREAS, Alan Cantrell coached both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams starting in the 1990 - 1991 school year, but stopped coaching the boys’ team when the Virginia High School League moved Group A girls’ basketball to a winter season in 2003 - 2004; and
WHEREAS, a motivational leader, Alan Cantrell coached the Floyd County High School girls’ basketball team to the 2007 - 2008 Group A Division 2 title and the team has reached the state final four for the past four years; and
WHEREAS, during his Floyd County High School girls’ basketball coaching career, Alan Cantrell compiled an impressive 500 - 169 record with three state titles while he had a 181 - 100 record coaching the boys’ basketball team; and
WHEREAS, Alan Cantrell had the unique opportunity to coach state championship teams that each of his children, Travis and Melissa, played on; and
WHEREAS, throughout a long and successful career, Alan Cantrell has also coached track and field, volleyball, baseball, and football, serving as a role model and enthusiastic mentor in all his endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Alan Cantrell’s success was bolstered by the support of the Floyd County High School community of parents, administrators, faculty, and students; the players’ loyalty and commitment to the program; and the dedication, friendship, and positive impact of the coaching staff; and
WHEREAS, Alan Cantrell looks forward to continuing to teach health and physical education, spending time with his family, and tending to his 13 horses; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Alan Cantrell on his outstanding career as head coach of the Floyd County High School girls’ basketball team; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alan Cantrell as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his many accomplishments and best wishes in his future endeavors.
