Celebrating the life of Helen Hudson Shelburne Perdue.

WHEREAS, Helen Hudson Shelburne Perdue, a devoted wife and mother and respected citizen from Rocky Mount, died on February 17, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Dallas, Texas, Helen Perdue was born to loving parents Cephas Gillespie Shelburne and Emma Divers Shelburne on October 25, 1914, and was one of five siblings; and

WHEREAS, a hard-working student, Helen Perdue graduated from high school in Rocky Mount before attending Lynchburg College and Texas Christian University; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Helen Perdue joined the ranks of women across the United States who supported the war effort at home through her work as a clerk for the rationing board; and

WHEREAS, in 1943 Helen Perdue married the love of her life, the late Clyde (Yidie) H. Perdue and together they raised four children on Diamond Avenue in the house built by Clyde’s father, Jesse; and

WHEREAS, in addition to raising her family, Helen Perdue also operated a tax preparation business in her husband’s office, where she was known for her careful work and exuberant manner; and

WHEREAS, Helen Perdue generously gave of her time and talents in the community, including serving on the altar guild at Trinity Episcopal Church and as a leader of her daughter’s Girl Scout troops; and

WHEREAS, Helen Perdue was well-known in the community for her love of Halloween; she made annual trips to the elementary schools in October dressed as a ghost to tell scary stories to the children and residents of Rocky Mount came to her home to see her huge carved jack-o’-lanterns; and

WHEREAS, a vibrant and active woman, Helen Perdue enjoyed horseback riding with her husband, knitting, gardening, and golfing; and

WHEREAS, Helen Perdue will be fondly remembered for her kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by her children, Emma Parcell, Nannie Leake, Randolph Martin, and Clyde Holland Perdue, Jr., and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a devoted wife and mother and respected citizen, Helen Hudson Shelburne Perdue; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Helen Hudson Shelburne Perdue as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
