Celebrating the life of J. Michael Lunsford.

WHEREAS, J. Michael Lunsford, the beloved director of transportation for Loudoun County Public Schools, died on July 8, 2009; and

WHEREAS, as a student at Loudoun County High School, J. Michael (Mike) Lunsford accepted a job driving a school bus for $5 a day when gas was 36 cents a gallon; and

WHEREAS, after graduation, Mike Lunsford went to work for Loudoun County Public Schools and served as a computer operator and computer programmer before moving into the transportation area; and

WHEREAS, recognized as an exemplary administrator, Mike Lunsford rose through the ranks of the transportation department, becoming director of transportation in 1995; and

WHEREAS, as director of transportation for Loudoun County Public Schools, Mike Lunsford oversaw a department of over 900 employees and a fleet of 776 school buses that travels millions of miles a year transporting 50,000 students; and

WHEREAS, known for his easygoing manner and skill at solving problems, Mike Lunsford dealt with a variety of people with questions or complaints, made recommendations to the superintendent about snow delays or closings, and dealt with the challenges of rising gas prices; and

WHEREAS, Mike Lunsford dedicated over 40 years to ensuring that the children of the Loudoun County Public Schools traveled in safety; he was well-respected by his colleagues for his fairness and consideration toward others; and

WHEREAS, in 2007 Mike Lunsford was named one of the “Hidden Powers” in the Washington, D.C., area by Washingtonian magazine; and

WHEREAS, Mike Lunsford will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 31 years, Catherine; their children, Josh, Zack, and Emily; and the students, staff, and administration of Loudoun County Public Schools; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a beloved public school system employee and outstanding Virginian, J. Michael Lunsford; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of J. Michael Lunsford as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
