2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Carolyn Winstead Meyers is commended for her outstanding achievements as the fourth president of Norfolk State University; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Meyers received a bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a master’s degree and doctorate from the Georgia Institute of Technology and completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University; and
WHEREAS, prior to becoming president of Norfolk State University, Dr. Meyers served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs and as a tenured professor in the College of Engineering at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University; and
WHEREAS, under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Meyers, Norfolk State University has seen a 19 percent increase in freshman enrollment and improved retention rates; and
WHEREAS, committed to academic excellence, Dr. Meyers worked to launch the Honors College and increase the academic success of student athletes through the implementation of the scholar-athlete model for all sports; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Meyers has overseen the creation and approval of a Ph.D. program in Materials Science and Engineering, an online B.S. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, an online Ph.D. program in Social Work, and the bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) at the New College Institute in Martinsville, Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Norfolk State University has also launched the School of Extended Learning to meet the needs of nontraditional students and the School of Graduate and Professional Studies; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Meyers has worked diligently to enhance relationships with local communities and businesses through the inauguration of regular community neighborhood meetings and the formation of new business partnerships and teaming agreements with Smithfield Foods, Hampton Roads Technology Council, Georgia Aerospace, and the Harris Corporation; and
WHEREAS, a visionary leader, Dr. Meyers has worked to secure Norfolk State University’s financial future through the completion of the first major gifts campaign; the University has also seen a twofold increase in proposals for external support since November 2008; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Meyers also implemented a four-day work week in the 2009 and 2010 summers to reduce the University’s carbon footprint and cut energy costs; and
WHEREAS, Norfolk State University has received the Governor’s 2007 Small, Women and Minority-Owned (SWaM) Businesses Award for Highest SWaM Expenditures; recognition as a Military Friendly Institution; and recognition from President George W. Bush for its service-learning program under Dr. Meyers’ leadership; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated educator and administrator, Dr. Meyers has enjoyed an exemplary career in higher education that has spanned more than 30 years and includes contributions to the educational field in the Commonwealth and across the nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Carolyn Winstead Meyers for her exemplary leadership as president of Norfolk State University; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Carolyn Winstead Meyers as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for her many valuable contributions to quality education in the Commonwealth and best wishes in all her future endeavors.
