HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 327
Celebrating the life of James I. Mayer.

WHEREAS, James I. Mayer, 72, a respected citizen, community leader, and passionate political activist who lived in Arlington County for nearly 40 years, died on July 31, 2009; and

WHEREAS, James I. Mayer, the beloved son of William and Isabel Ingram Mayer, was born on June 11, 1937, and married Marjorie Mayer; and

WHEREAS, James I. Mayer graduated from Brown University in 1959 and received a master’s degree from the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969; and

WHEREAS, as a United States Air Force officer, James I. Mayer served in military intelligence in Japan and Korea, at Fort Meade with the National Security Agency, and later in the Defense Department at the Pentagon; and

WHEREAS, James I. Mayer retired from the United States Air Force in 1970 and stayed with the Defense Department as Director of Intelligence Resources in the office of the Secretary of Defense until 1984, then joined the CIA as Chief of Planning and Resources for the deputy director of science and technology until his retirement in 1988; and

WHEREAS, James I. Mayer gave his time and expertise to numerous nonprofit groups until his next retirement in 1998, as Secretary of the Arlington United Way, chairman of Arlington’s Industrial Development Authority, chair of the Arlington Committee of 100, board member of the Dominion Brewing Company, and member of both the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Friends of the W & OD Trail; and

WHEREAS, the nature center at Potomac Overlook Regional Park was dedicated and renamed the James I. Mayer Center for Environmental Education in his honor for his service as an Arlington representative and as the chairman of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority from December 2007 until February 2009; and

WHEREAS, James I. Mayer, a faithful supporter of his community and the Democratic Party cause, using his steadfast gift of humor, gave endless hours to numerous Arlington Democratic candidates in endless capacities from treasurer to most trusted advisor; and

WHEREAS, James I. Mayer will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and his community and will be greatly missed by his wife, Marjorie; his sons, Kenneth and Jeremy; his daughter, Jennifer; his two daughters-in-law; his two grandchildren; his brother, Lawrence; and his many other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a hard-working activist and outstanding Virginian, James I. Mayer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James I. Mayer as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
