Celebrating the life of Major Harold E. Brown, Jr.

WHEREAS, United States Army Major Harold E. Brown, Jr., of Fairfax Station died on December 30, 2009, while bravely serving his country in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, a native of Bolton, Massachusetts, Harold Brown was born to loving parents Barbara and Harold Brown, Sr., from whom he learned the importance of serving others; and

WHEREAS, Harold Brown graduated from Nashoba Regional High School and received a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University; and

WHEREAS, while a student at George Washington University, Harold Brown met his beloved wife, Janet; they married in 1994 and had three beautiful children whom he adored; and

WHEREAS, a patriotic and courageous young man, Harold Brown attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, Harold Brown proudly served his country in Bosnia, during the Gulf War, and as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom; and

WHEREAS, Harold Brown continued to demonstrate his commitment to his country as a member of the United States Army Reserves while also working for Shareholder.com and then Science Applications International Corporation; and

WHEREAS, Harold Brown was reactivated in 2003 and was serving in the Khost province of Afghanistan when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest that killed Brown and six colleagues; and

WHEREAS, a man of determination and energy, Harold Brown lived his too brief life to the fullest, bringing joy to his family and friends and serving his country with great honor and resolve; and

WHEREAS, Harold Brown will be greatly missed by his young family, including his wife, Janet; children, Paul, Lena, and Claire; his parents, Barbara and Harold Brown, Sr.; and many other loving family members, friends, and colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Harold Brown’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Major Harold E. Brown, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Major Harold E. Brown, Jr., as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
