2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Rebecca Perdue Lumsden, a retired educator from Franklin County, died on November 4, 2009, at the age of 102; and
WHEREAS, Rebecca Lumsden was born on July 1, 1907, to loving parents Jordan and Alice Dudley Perdue and was one of four siblings; and
WHEREAS, an industrious and hard-working student, Rebecca Lumsden received a normal professional degree from The College of William & Mary and married the love of her life, John C. (Jack) Lumsden; and
WHEREAS, a creative and caring teacher, Rebecca Lumsden taught in the Franklin County School Division from 1926 until 1969; during her long teaching career, she influenced thousands of students; and
WHEREAS, Rebecca Lumsden taught at Maple Grove Elementary School, Rocky Mount Elementary School, Henry Forks Elementary School, White Elementary School, Chestnut Hill Elementary School, Brushy Hill Elementary School, Redwood Elementary School, Dudley Elementary School, and Rocky Mount High School; and
WHEREAS, dedicated to her profession, Rebecca Lumsden remained active in education even after her retirement, tutoring homebound students; and
WHEREAS, Rebecca Lumsden was an active member of the Primitive Baptist Church and enjoyed tending her flowers in her yard; reading, especially the Bible and history; and engaging in handwork, especially embroidering lace; and
WHEREAS, Rebecca Lumsden will be fondly remembered for her kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by her son, Jerre Lumsden; grandchildren John and Jim Lumsden; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator, Rebecca Perdue Lumsden; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rebecca Perdue Lumsden as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
