2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Dr. Henry B. Larzelere of Virginia Beach, a respected citizen and outstanding physician, died on January 26, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Geneva, New York, Henry B. Larzelere was born on December 18, 1916, the son of the late Benton and Reba Mae Larzelere, grew up in Flint, Michigan, attended the local junior college, and transferred to Northwestern University to earn an undergraduate degree; he completed a medical degree from Northwestern Medical School on a senior scholarship from the Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild in 1936; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Larzelere served his internship and residency at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan, and received fellowships in surgery from the University of Michigan Graduate School, Hahnemann University Hospital, and New England Deaconess Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Larzelere served his country with the United States Army Medical Corps in the European Theater during World War II; he joined the Army Reserve and was both an instructor and practicing physician, retiring after 36 years with the rank of colonel; and
WHEREAS, board certified in both thoracic and general surgery, Dr. Larzelere worked at Philadelphia hospitals and at Temple University Medical School to develop innovative surgical instruments and techniques and was a pioneer in the early days of lung transplants and heart surgery; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Larzelere was a founding member of the Thoracic Surgical Society and the American Trauma Society, a member of the International College of Surgeons, and active in many other professional organizations; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Larzelere opened a private medical practice in Lynchburg and continued to treat patients until retiring in 1994; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Dr. Larzelere generously gave his time and expertise to many civic organizations, including the Lion's Club and the John Birch Society; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Larzelere loved history and politics, regularly wrote letters to the editor of the local newspaper, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and ice skating; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Larzelere will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Marie Teresa Gorman Larzelere; his children and their families, Loretta Larzelere, Mary Vinet and husband Christopher, Genevieve Shober, John Larzelere and wife Jane, and Annette Fitzgerald and husband Robert, and his grandchildren, Brian, Geoffrey, Austin, Stephen, Christen, Jay, Rebecca, Sarah, Charles, Audrey, Matthew, Katharine, Thomas, Michael, and Elizabeth and great-grandson Henry; his nephew, Rory O'Connor and wife Karen; and many other loving relatives and good friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the passing of a fine physician and an outstanding Virginian, Dr. Henry B. Larzelere; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Henry B. Larzelere as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
