Commending the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School football team.

WHEREAS, the well-named Knights of Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School were runners-up for the Virginia Independent Schools Division I football championship in 2002 and were champions of the same division in 2003; and

WHEREAS, the Knights of 2009, inspired by the achievements of their predecessors, rallied to overcome overwhelming odds to win the championship of the Virginia Independent Schools Division III football conference; and

WHEREAS, to earn the championship the Knights had first to avenge a regular season 28 - 7 loss to the defending state championship team; and

WHEREAS, having secured their revenge, the Knights would have to avenge, too, a regular season 23 - 14 loss to a three-time state championship team; and

WHEREAS, having secured their second revenge, the Knights fell behind 0 - 9 after three quarters of the State Championship game against Isle of Wight, only to roar to a 22 - 16 triumph in what Coach Mike Henderson termed “the most incredible game the Knights have ever played”; and

WHEREAS, Coach Henderson is assisted by Daniel Bendele, Blake Derby, Brice Fritts, and Lonnie Johnson, and aided by Lauren Phillips and Shannon Sadak as managers and Frank Derby as videographer; and

WHEREAS, the Knights Roster of 2009 includes eighth-grader Will Moore; freshmen Stephen Bendele, Tommy Savarie, John Haas, Antonio Evola, Greg Woody, Collin Rogers; sophomores David Lewis, Marquis Smith, Brian Clarke, Nathaniel Settle, T. J. Dobrucky, Ethan Sill, Christian Goodwyn, Stephen Barham, Matt Crone; juniors Deon Watts, Justin Yancey, Trevor Gilliam, Brandon Holt, John Moore, Gavin Paul, Nathan Temple, Carter Brandon, and Graham O’Donnell; and

WHEREAS, the senior class members of the gridiron State Champion Knights of 2009 include Austin Wingfield, Connor Paul, Chris Howard, Ryan Bendele, Aaron Johnson, Matt Wyman, Josh Price, and Ross Rudolph; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the exemplary performance in football of the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School’s Knights of 2009 and affirm their claim to the honored title of Champions; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mike Henderson as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of the outstanding performance of the 2009 Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School’s football team.
