HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 289
Celebrating the life of Theodore Edward BaCote, Jr.

WHEREAS, Theodore Edward BaCote, Jr., a respected citizen and community supporter, as well as a beloved coach and educator for the Newport News Public Schools for 30 years, died on June 1, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Theodore “Ted” BaCote, Jr., was born in Ansonia, Connecticut, the son of the late Nancy Saunders BaCote and Theodore E. BaCote, Sr., and he proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps in Korea; and

WHEREAS, after his military service, Ted BaCote attended Virginia Union University (VUU), where he was a superb athlete and captain of the 1959 undefeated Panthers football team; he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and was inducted into the VUU Athletic Department Hall of Fame in 2008; and

WHEREAS, Coach BaCote worked well with young people and genuinely cared about them and the choices they made; after his retirement, he continued working at the Virginia High School League (VHSL) All-Star games, with the VHSL Coaches Association, and for the Apprentice School football leagues; and

WHEREAS, Ted BaCote was active in many civic organizations, working as a leader, fund raiser, and advocate for diverse causes within the community, including as a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the Board of the C. Waldo Scott Center for HOPE, the Hampton Roads Boys Club, the Newport News YMCA, the College Coaches Association, the Knights of Peter Claver, and the Food Bank of the Virginia Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, always willing to help his neighbors in need, Ted BaCote was a spiritual man and a faithful member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Newport News; he was active in the church's many missions in the community, especially volunteering for the “Back Door” hot lunch program and helping out in the Social Ministries Office; and

WHEREAS, Ted BaCote will be fondly remembered as a loyal friend, mentor, and selfless humanitarian and will be greatly missed by his wife of 49 years, Delegate Mamye BaCote; his three sons, Theodore III, Derek, and Marlon; his daughters-in-law; his 10 wonderful grandchildren; and numerous other dear family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine educator, community leader, and an outstanding Virginian, Theodore Edward BaCote, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Theodore Edward BaCote, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
