HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 288
Commending the Life Center of Galax.

WHEREAS, the Life Center of Galax has helped thousands of patients battle substance abuse since its inception in 1973; and

WHEREAS, established by a local family active in the medical field, the Life Center of Galax was the first licensed and accredited residential free-standing facility in the Commonwealth to exclusively treat chemical dependency; and

WHEREAS, the Life Center of Galax began with 38 beds and just a few patients; today, the facility can accommodate 103 patients and in 2009 it treated 1,890 patients; and

WHEREAS, while the Life Center of Galax began by providing help for an underserved population in Southwest Virginia, it has grown to serve all of Virginia, western and central North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southern West Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Life Center of Galax has expanded its services over the years to match client needs; current programs include dual-diagnosis services for those with mental illness, treatment for chronic pain and addiction, and inpatient services for DUI/DWI clients; and

WHEREAS, in response to a growing problem of prescription drug abuse in the region, the Life Center of Galax opened the first opiate recovery outpatient treatment program in Southwest Virginia in 2000; its outpatient opiate treatment services in the region now serve 1,753 patients in Galax, Clinch Valley, and Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, in an effort to provide collaboration, education, and coordination of services in the Commonwealth, the Life Center of Galax actively participates in coalitions, statewide substance abuse treatment organizations, and human resource organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Life Center of Galax is staffed by highly trained and experienced counselors and therapists who are committed to helping their clients break free from substance abuse; and

WHEREAS, the Life Center of Galax has provided a vital service to those citizens of Southwest Virginia who struggle with chemical dependency, providing professional resources and ongoing support since 1973; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Life Center of Galax for its efforts to help those battling substance abuse; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Life Center of Galax as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for the services it provides to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
