Commending the Herndon Rotary Club on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Herndon Rotary Club celebrated 70 years of service to the Herndon community in 2009; and

WHEREAS, formed in June of 1939 with Ernest Shull as the first president, the 64-member club follows the International Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” in providing an opportunity for business leaders to serve people in Herndon and around the world; and

WHEREAS, Herndon Rotary Club members generously serve the community through working with Herndon schools, providing art activities for the United Airlines Fantasy Flight at Dulles International Airport, and cohosting Senior Senior Prom with the Reston Rotary Club; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Rotary Club also supports the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic, the Relay for Life, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and the Embry Rucker Community Shelter; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Rotary Club raises approximately $60,000 each year and the majority of the funds go directly back into the community; a share of the funds is used for international service projects, including providing clean drinking water for the 20,000 residents of Pignon, Haiti; and

WHEREAS, throughout the years, the Herndon Rotary Club has used the innovative and creative ideas and business skills of its members as it has engaged in projects to raise funds; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Rotary Club created the Herndon-Reston community phone book and though now published by other companies, the phone book continues to provide significant funding for Herndon Rotary Club scholarships; and

WHEREAS, for the past 70 years, the Herndon Rotary Club has provided its members the opportunity to socialize with other business professionals and make valuable contributions to the Herndon and international community; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Rotary Club members look forward to continuing to work as part of Rotary International to have a positive impact on the community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Herndon Rotary Club on the occasion of its 70th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tony Fulkerson, President of the Herndon Rotary Club, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration and gratitude for the Club’s service to the citizens of Herndon.
