WHEREAS, Karen Halsey, an outstanding Title I educator from Independence Elementary School in Grayson County, was honored as the 2007 - 2008 Grayson County Public School Teacher of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Karen Halsey received a bachelor’s degree from Radford University and began her career in Grayson County Public Schools as a substitute teacher; she worked briefly for the Town of Fries school system and has been with Grayson County Public Schools since 1987; and
WHEREAS, Karen Halsey works tirelessly to ensure a positive, well-managed learning environment for her students where they respect one another and feel loved and valued; and
WHEREAS, Karen Halsey encourages her students to try their best and to help others as she strives to be the best educator she can be, constantly evaluating her techniques and looking for ways to best connect with and motivate her students; and
WHEREAS, always willing to share her experience and expertise with others, Karen Halsey serves as a lead teacher and mentor teacher at Independence Elementary School, helping new teachers acclimate to the school and classroom and serving as a role model; and
WHEREAS, Karen Halsey is an active participant in the education community as a member of the Grayson County Education Association and National Education Association; and
WHEREAS, recognized for her efforts on behalf of her students, Karen Halsey received the Independence Elementary School Teacher of the Year award in 2008 and was honored as a division nominee for Regional Teacher of the Year in 2009; and
WHEREAS, a talented and dedicated educator, Karen Halsey has touched the lives of many students throughout the years and epitomizes the vital role innovative teachers play in the education of Virginia’s children; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Karen Halsey for her selection as the 2007 - 2008 Grayson County Public School Teacher of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Karen Halsey as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for her commitment to the young people of Grayson County.
