WHEREAS, the great battle of Chickamauga was fought on September 19 and 20, 1863, with the Confederate Army of Tennessee stopping the Union advance; and

WHEREAS, after the Civil War, Congress passed legislation to create a park, the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, at the site of the battle; a national commission was created to ascertain and mark the positions of the different troops; and

WHEREAS, various states appointed provisional commissions to aid in the location of battle lines at the park; and

WHEREAS, Chapter 306 of the 1893 - 1894 Acts of Assembly authorized and directed the governor to appoint a commission to cooperate with the national commission in ascertaining the position occupied by the Virginia troops on the battlefield of Chickamauga and Chattanooga; and

WHEREAS, the 1895 - 1896 House and Senate Journal records show bills presented to the Committee on Finance for “an appropriation to enable the Virginia Chickamauga Commission to mark by monument or monuments, and other suitable memorials, the positions held by the Virginia troops in the battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga, within the limits of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park”; and

WHEREAS, no Virginia monument was ever erected at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park; and

WHEREAS, the 63rd Virginia Infantry/54th Virginia Infantry Descendants Association is willing to raise the funds and erect a monument in memory of those Confederate soldiers from Virginia who fought and died at the battlefield; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly recognize the 63rd Virginia Infantry/54th Virginia Infantry Descendants Association as Virginia’s agent to fund and erect a monument [ to in memory of the ] Virginia [ Confederate ] soldiers at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the James Christman of the 63rd Virginia Infantry/54th Virginia Infantry Descendants Association and Jim Ogden, head historian at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter.
