Commending Creeds Elementary School on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 2009 Creeds Elementary School celebrated 70 years of educating and nurturing the children of Virginia Beach; and

WHEREAS, the oldest educational facility in the City of Virginia Beach, the original structure for Creeds Elementary School was built by the Works Progress Administration for the 1939 - 1940 school year; and

WHEREAS, in 1949 a lunchroom, gymnasium, and three classrooms were added to the original structure and in 1969 an air-conditioned primary wing that included four classrooms and a modern library was added; and

WHEREAS, in 1999 a $6 million modernization project began that transformed Creeds Elementary School; the school now has new classrooms, art and music rooms, an administrative suite, and a media center; and

WHEREAS, Creeds Elementary School serves the families of Back Bay, Blackwater, Creeds, and portions of Knotts Island, Munden Point, Pleasant Ridge, and Pungo; and

WHEREAS, despite the many changes that have occurred in Virginia Beach, Creeds Elementary School, with approximately 300 students, has been able to maintain the image and charm of a small country school that is the focal point of the rural community; and

WHEREAS, Creeds Elementary School has an instructional staff of 24 teachers, four teacher assistants, and 20 classified personnel; daily physical education and weekly art, music, and library instruction are provided by specialists; and

WHEREAS, Creeds Elementary School has received many awards and accolades including the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence; the 2008 and 2009 Pearl School Award; the 2006 - 2008 Inviting School Award from the International Alliance for Invitational Education; the 2008 - 2010 Inviting School Year 2 “Silver Starfish” Award from the International Alliance for Invitational Education (one of five in the United States and the only one in the Commonwealth of Virginia); and 2004 - 2007 Exemplary PTA Awards from the Virginia Beach Council of PTAs; and

WHEREAS, the administration, faculty, and staff work together to constantly improve all aspects of the students’ educational experiences with special emphases on home and school partnerships, improved attendance, self-esteem, and school safety; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Creeds Elementary School on the occasion of its 70th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robin Davenport, Principal of Creeds Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the school’s commitment to its students.
