WHEREAS, diseases of the heart are the nation’s leading cause of death and stroke is the third leading cause of death; and

WHEREAS, cardiovascular disease claims the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans each year; and

WHEREAS, too many people die each year because they are unaware that heart disease is a threat; and

WHEREAS, heart disease does not discriminate; it affects people from all age groups, ethnicities, family histories, and walks of life; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, the direct and indirect cost of cardiovascular diseases in the United States, including stroke, is estimated to be $503.2 billion; and

WHEREAS, since 1963, February has been designated as American Heart Month; and

WHEREAS, all individuals should learn their own personal risk for heart disease and talk to their healthcare provider; and

WHEREAS, making the right choices relating to proper nutrition, physical activity, and other healthy lifestyle choices are essential to living a heart healthy life; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate the month of February, in 2010 and in each succeeding year, as American Heart Month in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly encourage all Virginians to increase their awareness of heart disease and reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this month on the General Assembly’s website.
