Commending Hilton Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Hilton Elementary School was honored as a United States Department of Education No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School on September 15, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Hilton Elementary School is one of six public elementary schools in Virginia and one of only 264 schools in the country to receive the 2009 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School designation; the school received a plaque and a flag signifying its Blue Ribbon status; and

WHEREAS, completed in 1919, Hilton Elementary School, a Communication Arts Magnet School, is the oldest elementary school in Newport News still in operation; and

WHEREAS, the Communication Arts Magnet Program at Hilton Elementary School provides first through fifth graders a well-balanced academic program with an emphasis on languages, literature, and communication; and

WHEREAS, Hilton Elementary School attempts to build within each child a sense of responsibility, pride in accomplishment, and a positive self-image through proven achievement in a safe and orderly setting; and

WHEREAS, the teachers and leadership of Hilton Elementary School emphasize good communication skills, an appreciation of the arts, fitness, and exemplary citizenship; the school also strongly encourages family involvement; and

WHEREAS, Hilton Elementary School, with 385 students in grades K through five, had 100 percent of its students pass the Grade 3 - 5 English Standards of Learning (SOL), Mathematics SOL, Grade 3 History SOL, and History SOL; and

WHEREAS, Hilton Elementary School is part of the Newport News Public Schools Division, one of three school divisions nationwide to earn an award for technology leadership from the National School Boards Association in 2009; and

WHEREAS, Hilton Elementary School also earned the Adequate Yearly Progress designation from the United States Department of Education and received a 2010 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, one of just 153 public schools from across the Commonwealth that earned the award; and

WHEREAS, Hilton Elementary School’s distinguished Blue Ribbon School award is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the students, parents, administration, teachers, and staff and the support of the community of Newport News; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Hilton Elementary School as a recipient of the United States Department of Education No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mary Jo Anastasio, the principal of Hilton Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for the school’s commitment to the young people of Newport News and the Commonwealth.
