HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 256
Commending the Christopher Newport University women’s volleyball team.

WHEREAS, the Christopher Newport University women’s volleyball  team finished a remarkable season with a 36 - 7 record and made its seventh trip to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament in the last nine years; and

WHEREAS, Christopher Newport University’s (CNU) women’s volleyball team dominated the USA South Athletic Conference by going 21 - 0 in USA South play; this was the third straight conference title for CNU volleyball, and the Captains have now won an amazing 63 straight conference matches dating back to 2007; and

WHEREAS, the CNU Captains advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament with wins over Stevens Institute of Technology, New York University, and Salisbury University and finished the season ranked 16th in the nation in the final poll of the American Volleyball Coaches Association; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Lindsay Birch, in her eighth season with Christopher Newport University, led the team members to their best season record in the program’s history; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association selected Head Coach Lindsay Birch as the Coach of the Year, junior Caitlyn Jansen as Player of the Year, and freshman Kara Elder as Rookie of the Year in its annual All-State Division II-III team; and

WHEREAS, with no seniors on the team, the Christopher Newport University volleyball team will welcome back all 14 players and is well-positioned to have a strong 2010 season; and

WHEREAS, the success of the 2009 Christopher Newport University women’s volleyball team is due to the hard work and perseverance of the players, the leadership of Head Coach Lindsay Birch and her staff, and the support of the Christopher Newport University community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Christopher Newport University women’s volleyball team for its outstanding 2009 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Lindsay Birch as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations for the team’s winning season and many awards and recognitions.
