2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Carl Joseph Koenig, Sr., a beloved retired teacher and basketball coach at St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, died on January 13, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Springfield, Illinois, Carl Koenig was born to loving parents Georgena Lester Koenig and Lawrence Koenig, Sr., on February 9, 1934, and was one of three siblings; and
WHEREAS, Carl Koenig proudly served his country in the United States Army, and while stationed in Virginia, became interested in attending Randolph-Macon College; and
WHEREAS, while at Randolph-Macon College, Carl Koenig was captain of the basketball team; he scored over 1,200 points and later in life was inducted into the Randolph-Macon Athletic Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, after graduation, Carl Koenig taught briefly at Douglas Freeman High School, Henrico High School, and Mount Vernon High School before coming to St. Christopher’s School as a basketball coach and history teacher; and
WHEREAS, Carl Koenig influenced generations of young men at St. Christopher’s School with his enthusiastic approach to teaching and coaching over his 36-year career; and
WHEREAS, ambitious and fun-loving, Carl Koenig coached basketball, football, and baseball at various levels; he coached over 1,000 athletic competitions and won over 400 games, including multiple Prep League titles; and
WHEREAS, a passionate teacher who made history come alive for his students, Carl Koenig not only shaped the minds of his students but instilled in them a sense of fairness, honor, and integrity; and
WHEREAS, in 2000 St. Christopher’s School established the Carl J. Koenig Prize for Faculty Excellence in honor of Carl Koenig and his years of service; it is awarded annually “to that member of the Middle or Upper School faculty who sees the good in every boy, who strives through positive reinforcement to help each student to develop his talents and strengthen his weaknesses, and who demonstrates by example that character and integrity matter above all”; and
WHEREAS, after decades of outstanding service to the students of St. Christopher’s School, Carl Koenig retired and moved to Bedford and became involved in the community, including serving as a page at Bedford Central Library and coaching basketball at Liberty High School; and
WHEREAS, Carl Koenig will be fondly remembered for his enthusiastic nature and positive influence on those around him and greatly missed by his children, Becky, Lon, and Carl and their families; a special friend, Barbara Norton; and his legion of students from over the years; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator and outstanding Virginian, Carl Joseph Koenig, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Carl Joseph Koenig, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
