Commending John Hanna.

WHEREAS, Captain John Hanna is recognized in 2010 for his leadership of the Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown and for his outstanding service to his community; and

WHEREAS, for over 10 years, Captain John Hanna has served the Watermen’s Museum in many capacities—as benefactor, as acting executive director, as president, and as a member of the board of directors; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1981, the Watermen's Museum is a private, nonprofit museum located on the York River in historic Yorktown, Virginia, that portrays the working and family life of the watermen who have harvested the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries throughout America’s history; and

WHEREAS, the Watermen's Museum was established as a part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the October 1781 Battle of Yorktown, the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War; and

WHEREAS, under Captain John Hanna’s guidance, the mission of the Watermen’s Museum has been to celebrate the heritage of the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay, interpret the culture of the watermen and their numerous contributions to the region, and provide and support educational opportunities for adults and young people in order to preserve and enhance the environment of the Chesapeake Bay; and

WHEREAS, Captain John Hanna has worked tirelessly to make the Watermen’s Museum a success, donating his time, effort, experience, and funding so that residents of Yorktown and visitors to the area, which is rich in history and natural beauty, may learn about the great maritime traditions of the Chesapeake Bay; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend John Hanna for his excellent guidance and leadership of the Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown and for his outstanding service to his community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Hanna as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his hard work and dedication to preserve the history and culture of the waterman, historic Yorktown, the region, and the Commonwealth.
