HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 206
Celebrating the life of George Barnett, Sr.

WHEREAS, George Barnett, Sr., of Suffolk, a respected citizen, local leader, and an outstanding community supporter, died on December 28, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Suffolk, George Barnett, Sr., was born to the late Ora Yates Barnett and David Frank Barnett, Sr., and was the brother of the late Lt. Col. David Frank Barnett, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, George Barnett proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS, a retired dentist, Dr. George Barnett maintained a very busy dental practice for many years in the Suffolk area; he was also the president of Barnett Rentals; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated public servant, Dr. George Barnett served the City of Suffolk and his fellow citizens as a longtime city councilman and as mayor; and

WHEREAS, committed to the future prosperity of Suffolk, Dr. George Barnett was the founder of the Suffolk Leadership Academy and Suffolk Tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Dr. George Barnett generously gave his time and expertise to many civic and professional organizations, including as a member of the Suffolk Lions Club, the American Dental Association, and the American Legion; and

WHEREAS, Dr. George Barnett received many awards and accolades over the years for his many contributions to his community, including being honored as First Citizen of Suffolk in 1987; and

WHEREAS, Dr. George Barnett was a faithful lifetime member of Suffolk Christian Church and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Dr. George Barnett will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his large, loving family, which includes his three children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; his numerous friends and colleagues; and the citizens of Suffolk; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, George Barnett, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George Barnett, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
