WHEREAS, Thomas Emmanuel Larner, a dedicated police officer of the Staunton Police Department, died on January 12, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Staunton, Thomas Larner was born on May 16, 1973, to loving parents Robert Miller and Janet Larner; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Larner graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and, desirous to enter law enforcement, received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Old Dominion University; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Larner joined the Staunton Police Department and faithfully served for 14 years, retiring as a sergeant; and
WHEREAS, the Staunton Police Department provides vital services to the citizens of Staunton, including basic patrol activities, the investigation and apprehension of suspects involved in criminal activities, and community policing; and
WHEREAS, an exemplary leader, Sergeant Thomas Larner served as cocaptain of the Critical Incident Response Team; and
WHEREAS, beloved by his fellow officers, Sergeant Thomas Larner was well-known in the Staunton community as a dedicated and hard-working police officer with a quiet and calm manner; and
WHEREAS, a gifted trumpet player, Thomas Larner frequently shared his gift with his community and church; he also gave of his time and talents as a member of the BPO Elks #351; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Larner was a licensed pilot and avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and hunting with his friends and family; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Larner will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Angela; precious daughter, Mackenzie; his parents and siblings; and his numerous other family members, friends, and the officers of the Staunton Police Department; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a dedicated police officer and outstanding Virginian, Thomas Emmanuel Larner; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas Emmanuel Larner as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
