10100590DWHEREAS, Brigadier General John W. Nicholson, United States Army (Ret.), was awarded the Silver Star for his brave actions as an airborne ranger combat infantryman in the Vietnam War 46 years ago, when he and others in his unit saved 13 wounded soldiers during a battle in the Mekong Delta; and
WHEREAS, then a captain, John W. “Jack” Nicholson and his men went back to get the injured, carrying them more than six hours on their backs to safety at a medical command post; and
WHEREAS, General Nicholson was presented the Silver Star at a ceremony at Fort Myer in Arlington on October 30, 2009; and
WHEREAS, General Nicholson’s medal cited his “selfless courage in the face of a determined enemy are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army”; and
WHEREAS, General Nicholson is a 1956 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he received the General MacArthur Leadership Award for his class; he also holds a master’s degree in public administration; and
WHEREAS, during his distinguished 30-year military career, General Nicholson served in Germany, Korea, Lebanon, Switzerland, and Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, General Nicholson served as director of the National Cemetery Administration and secretary for Memorial Affairs, Department of Veterans Affairs, and was appointed secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission by President George W. Bush; and
WHEREAS, General Nicholson lives in The Coves in Virginia with his wife, Sophie, and continues to serve his country by promoting patriotism and inspiring young people to make a difference in their communities; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Brigadier General John W. Nicholson (Ret.) as a recipient of the Silver Star for bravery during his service in the Vietnam War; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Brigadier General John W. Nicholson (Ret.) as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his longtime service to his country.
