WHEREAS, the Cold War Museum will open to the public in 2010 in its new physical home in the mixed-use community of Vint Hill in picturesque Fauquier County; and

WHEREAS, the Cold War Museum was founded in 1996 by Francis Gary Powers, Jr., and John C. Welch to preserve Cold War history and honor Cold War veterans; and

WHEREAS, Francis Gary Powers, Jr., is the son of Francis Gary Powers, a CIA pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960; he was held in Soviet custody until 1962, when he was exchanged for a Soviet KGB agent who had been captured by the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Vint Hill location is ideal for the Cold War Museum, as the former Vint Hill Farms Station was used during the Cold War by the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the U.S. Army to safeguard the United States against a surprise nuclear attack; and

WHEREAS, the Vint Hill Economic Development Authority has generously contributed nine months of free storage space to the Cold War Museum for its unique and rare Cold War artifacts as well as $50,000 for building renovations; the Fauquier County Industrial Development Authority graciously matched the Vint Hill Economic Development Authority contribution; and

WHEREAS, in an ideal location to draw visitors, Vint Hill is part of the The Journey through Hallowed Ground national heritage area and close to the Manassas National Battlefield Park and the National Museum of the Marine Corps; and

WHEREAS, currently the museum has a traveling exhibit of the U-2 incident that has been shown across the United States and internationally; the location at Vint Hill will allow the Cold War Museum to showcase key items from its collection, open a reference research library, and operate a gift store; and

WHEREAS, the Cold War Museum fills a substantial void in the interpretation of post-World War II history and educates current and future generations about this critical period in international relations; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Cold War Museum on its new location in Vint Hill in Fauquier County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Francis Gary Powers, Jr., co-founder of the Cold War Museum, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for the future.
