WHEREAS, United States Army Sergeant Dale Russel Griffin, a Virginia Military Institute alumnus, was killed in the line of duty on October 27, 2009, while valiantly serving his country in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, Dale Russel Griffin grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana, the beloved son of Dona and Gene Griffin; and

WHEREAS, Dale Griffin graduated from Terre Haute South Vigo High School in 1999 and was a member of the high school wrestling team, making it to the state finals and clinching the second place title for his weight class; and

WHEREAS, Dale Griffin matriculated with the Virginia Military Institute Class of 2003, attended VMI for three semesters, and was a championship wrestler for the Keydets; and

WHEREAS, an outstanding and gifted athlete, Dale Griffin won his weight class in the All-Academy Wrestling Championship in 2000 as a freshman at VMI and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and highly trained soldier, Sergeant Griffin was a proud member of the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division based in Fort Lewis, Washington; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Griffin died in a roadside bombing while on duty with his unit in southern Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Griffin will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his family, his numerous friends and Keydets, and his fellow soldiers; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Griffin’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic American, Sergeant Dale Russel Griffin; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sergeant Dale Russel Griffin as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
