10100876DWHEREAS, Sally H. Thomas of Ivy is recognized for her many years of dedicated service to her fellow citizens and Albemarle County; and
WHEREAS, born in a small town in Oregon, Sally Thomas attended Harvard University-Radcliffe College, where she met her future husband, George Thomas; she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in government and education; and
WHEREAS, in 1963 Sally Thomas moved to the Charlottesville-Albemarle area where she became involved in her community, including the local League of Women Voters, serving a period as president; and
WHEREAS, Sally Thomas’ commitment to education culminated in her appointment to the Albemarle County School Board as its at-large member from 1980 to 1983, during which time she also served as director of Governmental and Community Relations at the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, a respected and articulate advocate for education, growth management, and protection of natural resources, Sally Thomas was elected to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors on November 4, 1993; and
WHEREAS, with her popular election victory, Sally Thomas became a part of history as the only successful write-in candidate for the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors in modern times; and
WHEREAS, Sally Thomas won four successive terms to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors and served as chair from 2001 to 2002; and
WHEREAS, Sally Thomas has served and been active in numerous local, state, and national organizations throughout her career, including as a gubernatorial appointee to the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Local Government Advisory Commission; and
WHEREAS, Sally Thomas will long be appreciated as a progressive and visionary leader in rural protection and promotion of smart growth, as well as a champion of public participation in local government; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Sally H. Thomas on the occasion of her retirement from the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors after 16 years of service; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sally H. Thomas as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for her many outstanding achievements and gratitude for her commitment to the residents of Albemarle County.
