Commending Parklawn Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Parklawn Elementary School in Alexandria has been nominated for recognition under the National Title I Distinguished Schools Program by the Virginia Board of Education; and

WHEREAS, Parklawn Elementary School was selected by a peer review panel as the school to represent Virginia in the category of Closing the Achievement Gap Among Student Groups; and

WHEREAS, a project of the National Association of State Title I Directors (NASTID), the National Title I Distinguished Schools Program provides an opportunity for Title I schools from every state to be publicly recognized for their positive educational achievements; and

WHEREAS, the award recognizes schools that have raised academic achievement for economically disadvantaged students and have a poverty rate higher than 35 percent; and

WHEREAS, Parklawn Elementary School students come from 37 countries and speak 34 different languages, providing a diverse school experience; and

WHEREAS, the hard-working faculty and staff of Parklawn Elementary School are devoted to providing the best instructional practice; each grade level has at least one mobile lab, while every classroom has computer stations and Smartboard technology; and

WHEREAS, Parklawn Elementary School utilizes unique program models that help identify the individual needs of students so that instruction can be adapted; and

WHEREAS, the dedicated teachers, outstanding leadership, and support of the parents have led to the success of Parklawn Elementary School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Parklawn Elementary School for its nomination for recognition under the National Title I Distinguished Schools Program by the Virginia Board of Education; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Susan Akroyd, principal of Parklawn Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the school’s commitment to its students.
