2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, J. Lloyd Gregory, former fire chief of the Martinsville Fire Department, died on December 1, 2009; and
WHEREAS, a native of Henry County, Lloyd Gregory was born to the late Roy and Doris Gregory on September 22, 1925, and attended Martinsville High School; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Gregory proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 aboard the USS Wisconsin in the Pacific Theater; he received numerous medals, including the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with Five Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal, and American Campaign Medal; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Lloyd Gregory married his beloved wife, the late Charlotte Taylor, and they had four wonderful children, Dolores, Marilynn, Cindy, and the late John; and
WHEREAS, a career firefighter, Lloyd Gregory joined the Martinsville Fire Department in 1947 and served as chief of the department from 1968 to 1988, where he was known for his knowledge and ability to work well with others; and
WHEREAS, committed to protecting the community, Lloyd Gregory utilized modern techniques and equipment and helped organize and train volunteer fire departments and industrial fire brigades in Henry County; and
WHEREAS, under Lloyd Gregory’s leadership, the fire department won numerous first-place awards for fire prevention from the National Fire Protection Association; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Gregory was actively involved in several firefighting associations and served as past president of the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association, Inc., and was a former member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and Virginia State Firemen’s Association; and
WHEREAS, dedicated to excellence in firefighting, Lloyd Gregory was also a certified fire service instructor and served on the Virginia Fire Services Council; and
WHEREAS, recognized for his experience and leadership, Lloyd Gregory was appointed by the Governor’s Office in 1977 to serve as a member of the Advisory Legislative Commission to establish a State Fire Commission, which is now the Virginia Department of Fire Programs; and
WHEREAS, a compassionate man who loved his family, Lloyd Gregory will be greatly missed by his daughters, Dolores, Marilynn, and Cindy and their families; and his numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated community servant, J. Lloyd Gregory; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of J. Lloyd Gregory as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
