2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Hugh Robert Morrison, former Treasurer of Falls Church and community volunteer, died on July 12, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Hugh Robert “Bob” Morrison was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 7, 1938, to loving parents Hugh and Gertrude Mary Morrison and early on evidenced his two lifelong interests in printing and photography; and
WHEREAS, Bob Morrison proudly served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964; he was stationed at a NATO support base in Fontainebleu, France, where his duties included post photographer; and
WHEREAS, Bob Morrison went on to graduate from Howard University with a bachelor’s degree in English while also working at the National Geographic Society as a page layout technician; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated and valued employee, Bob Morrison worked for the National Geographic Society for almost 30 years; rising through the ranks to serve as contributing author for several books and serve as the managing editor for Educational Filmstrips; and
WHEREAS, Bob Morrison traveled widely on his assignments and had many adventures, including climbing the snow-clad peaks of the Cascades range and diving 200 feet down the edge of the continental shelf; and
WHEREAS, actively involved in his community, Bob Morrison was instrumental in the planning and establishment of the Falls Church News Press, the first successful newspaper to serve Falls Church; and
WHEREAS, Bob Morrison desired to be more involved in public service and when the Treasurer of Falls Church retired, Bob Morrison ran for the office and held the position from 1993 until 2006; and
WHEREAS, Bob Morrison generously gave of his time and talents in the community, serving on the board of directors of the Falls Church Cable Access Corporation and the Television, Internet & Video Association of DC, Inc.; he also volunteered at the DC Central Kitchen and received its Volunteer of the Year award in 2005; and
WHEREAS, Bob Morrison was an avid photographer; after his retirement, he featured his photos in local art shows and served as an official photographer for the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, the Capital Fringe Festival, and the D.C. Divas; and
WHEREAS, Bob Morrison served as a set photographer for two movies, The Seton Legacy and Come What May; he also received a screen acting credit for playing the role of a retired Supreme Court Justice in Come What May; and
WHEREAS, Bob Morrison will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Meredith; his two sons and daughter; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a dedicated public servant and community volunteer, Hugh Robert Morrison; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Hugh Robert Morrison as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
