Celebrating the life of John Harding Ball, Jr.

WHEREAS, John Harding Ball, Jr., of Walkerton, an outstanding businessman and respected community leader, died on November 19, 2009; and

WHEREAS, John Ball was born in King and Queen County on October 5, 1920, graduated from Marriott High School in St. Stephens Church, and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and

WHEREAS, in 1962 John Ball started his own company, the Ball Lumber Company, Inc., in Millers Tavern; and

WHEREAS, John Ball’s love of the outdoors and his growing sawmill business soon led him into forest management, and in 1993 he was selected Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year for Essex County; and

WHEREAS, for over 50 years, John Ball was a certified tree farmer and a conservationist, and he was well-known for excellent management of forest resources, wildlife preservation, and enhancing water quality; and

WHEREAS, John Ball was a member of the Advisory Committee on Reforestation for the State of Virginia, a director of Virginia Forests, Inc., and board chairman and a longtime director of the Bank of Essex; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his community, John Ball was a loyal master mason of the Arlington Lodge No. 102 AF & AM and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, the Acca Temple Shrine, and the King and Queen Ruritan Club; and

WHEREAS, always willing to help his neighbors in need, John Ball was a deacon and faithful member of Smyrna Christian Church and active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, John Ball will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, Anne Griggs Ball; his three sons, Robert Harding Ball, Edwin Gary Ball and his wife Carol, and John Page Ball; his five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and his other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine community leader and outstanding Virginian, John Harding Ball, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Harding Ball, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
