Requesting the Virginia Department of Transportation to reopen those interstate rest areas closed during July 2009. Report.

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth recently shut down 18 interstate rest areas in order to save money; and

WHEREAS, these rest areas are an integral part of the Commonwealth's transportation infrastructure; and

WHEREAS, these rest areas are very necessary from a safety perspective as they allow drivers to pull over to rest when drowsy, and this is especially important for long-haul truck drivers; and

WHEREAS, according to AAA, the safety of motorists will be negatively impacted by the closing of rest areas in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the closing of these rest areas will contribute to more interstate traffic accidents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Virginia Department of Transportation be requested to reopen those interstate rest areas closed during July 2009.

The Virginia Department of Transportation shall submit to the Division of Legislative Automated Systems an executive summary and report of its progress in meeting the request of this resolution no later than the first day of the 2010 Regular Session of the General Assembly. The executive summary and report shall be submitted for publication as a report document as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislative documents and reports and shall be posted on the General Assembly's website.
