099232320WHEREAS, Mano Talaiver, the director of Longwood University’s Institute for Teaching through Technology & Innovative Practices (ITTIP), is commended as the recipient of the prestigious 2009 Black Engineer of the Year Award for Promotion of Elementary Education; and
WHEREAS, Mano Talaiver received the award at the STEM Global Competitiveness Conference sponsored by Lockheed Martin Corporation, US Black Engineer & Information Technology Magazine, and the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities; and
WHEREAS, a native of India, Mano Talaiver received a bachelor’s from Madras University, master’s degrees from the Victoria University of Manchester and Madurai University, and a doctorate from the University of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, Mano Talaiver was a faculty member and dean at Lady Doak College in Madurai before she came to the United States in 1981; prior to working at Longwood University, Mano Talaiver worked as a teacher at the Richmond Christian School, as a technology specialist with the Chesterfield County Schools and the Mathematics & Science Center in Richmond, and as director of learning technologies at the Science Museum of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, ITTIP helps teachers integrate technology into the classroom and disseminates research-based best practices in schools; the institute serves 35 school divisions in Central and Southside Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Mano Talaiver works with low-income and minority students and rural school divisions to encourage science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education; and
WHEREAS, some of the impressive projects that the students work on include interactive game design, computer programming skills, and building an underwater robot; and
WHEREAS, energetic and creative, Mano Talaiver has worked diligently to provide the best science, technology, engineering, and mathematics resources to the students and teachers of Central and Southside Virginia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Mano Talaiver be hereby commended for receiving the 2009 Black Engineer of the Year Award for Promotion of Elementary Education; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mano Talaiver as an expression of the Senate’s admiration and respect for her commitment to the field of education.
