SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 482
Commending Marjorie Kain Cole.

WHEREAS, Marjorie Kain Cole of Red Mill, the advanced placement psychology teacher at Kellam High School of Virginia Beach Public Schools, is the recipient of the 2008 Mary Margaret Moffett Memorial Teacher of Excellence Award by the American Psychological Association’s Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP); and

WHEREAS, the Mary Margaret Moffett Memorial Teaching Award recognizes excellence in scientific psychological instruction at the high school level, and the STP grants the national award annually to a teacher who has been recommended by his or her colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Marjorie Cole won the prestigious award because she “most personified excellence in the teaching of psychology”; and

WHEREAS, Marjorie Cole graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, earned a master’s degree from Duke University, and did postgraduate work at The College of William and Mary and Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, in addition, Marjorie Cole trained under Texas A & M University professor Ludy Benjamin, who developed an advanced psychology program for high school students; and

WHEREAS, a veteran teacher of 33 years, Marjorie Cole teaches psychology I and II, advanced placement psychology, and criminal psychology at Kellam High School; and

WHEREAS, a gifted educator, Marjorie Cole uses her many talents and enthusiasm to instill the joy of learning in her students, and she tries to motivate them to become active learners; and

WHEREAS, utilizing innovative teaching techniques, Marjorie Cole has each student write letters to next year’s students giving them tips for success in her class; and the students produce a magazine modeled after Psychology Today; and

WHEREAS, Marjorie Cole helped to organize a Quiz Bowl, where high school students meet each year in January and April to participate in competitions that test their knowledge of psychology; and

WHEREAS, in 2003, Marjorie Cole also won the Henry C. Lee Award from the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine for the Best High School Class in Virginia Related to Criminal Science; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Marjorie Kain Cole on her well-deserved 2008 Mary Margaret Moffett Memorial Teacher of Excellence Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Marjorie Kain Cole as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for her commitment to the young people of Virginia Beach and the Commonwealth.
