Commending William H. Fuller III.

WHEREAS, William H. Fuller III, the commonwealth’s attorney for the City of Danville, will retire in 2009 after 40 years of service; and

WHEREAS, the commonwealth’s attorney is a constitutional officer and is elected by the people of the City of Danville as its chief prosecutor; and

WHEREAS, the office is responsible for the prosecution of criminal and traffic cases in the circuit court, general district court, and juvenile and domestic relations district court and also has responsibilities to answer petitions for appeal in the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, William Fuller received a bachelor’s degree from Randolph-Macon College, a master’s degree from Duke University, and a law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law; and

WHEREAS, William Fuller began his career as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Danville in 1966 and then went into private practice briefly; and

WHEREAS, a respected and dedicated attorney, William Fuller ran for commonwealth’s attorney in 1969 and took office in 1970; he was elected to 10 terms and has served steadily since 1970; and

WHEREAS, during his 40-year career as commonwealth’s attorney for Danville, William Fuller has prosecuted a variety of cases, including death penalty cases, crime sprees, murders, robberies, and sexual assaults; and

WHEREAS, a man of principle and integrity, William Fuller has worked diligently and compassionately to help those who have been victimized by crime, understanding the results of crime on innocent victims; and

WHEREAS, a great intellect, William Fuller also has a gift and talent for oratory, able to summarize and simplify complex legal principles and detailed evidence for jurors; and

WHEREAS, William Fuller has given generously of his time and talents for more than 40 years to the City of Danville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend William H. Fuller III on his 40 years of service to the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to William H. Fuller III as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his public service and best wishes in his future endeavors.
