SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 462
Celebrating the life of First Lieutenant Thomas J. Brown.

WHEREAS, United States Army First Lieutenant Thomas J. Brown, a resident of Burke, was killed in the line of duty on September 23, 2008, while valiantly serving his country in Salman Park, Iraq; and

WHEREAS, a hard-working student and talented athlete, Thomas Brown attended Notre Dame Catholic High School in Fairfield, Connecticut, and received a bachelor’s degree from George Mason University; and

WHEREAS, after working for a short time, Thomas Brown joined the United States Army and graduated from the Army’s Officer Candidate School; he also earned Airborne wings and a Ranger tab; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated officer, First Lieutenant Brown served with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division based in Baumholder, Germany; he had been promoted to First Lieutenant in October 2007 and sent to Iraq in April 2008; and

WHEREAS, on September 23, 2008, First Lieutenant Brown was leading a platoon on patrol in Salman Park, a town 60 miles north of Baghdad, when the platoon was ambushed and came under small arms fire; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Brown posthumously received a Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman Badge; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Brown was devoted to his loving family, including his father, the late Kevin Brown; his mother, Carol Brown; his twin brother, Timothy; his girlfriend Angela Yeo; his numerous friends; and the soldiers under his command; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Brown’s death is a reminder of the hazards faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, First Lieutenant Thomas J. Brown; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of First Lieutenant Thomas J. Brown as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
