WHEREAS, Albert G. Johnson of the Town of Mineral, a beloved citizen and an admired community leader in Louisa County, died on November 4, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a Louisa County native, Albert G. “Sambo” Johnson was born in Green Springs on February 3, 1931, the son of the late James Samuel Johnson, Sr., and Maggie Ennis Johnson; and

WHEREAS, Sambo Johnson graduated from Louisa County High School and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps; and

WHEREAS, Sambo Johnson was employed as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office, retiring after 33 years of exemplary service; and

WHEREAS, together with a group of area businessmen, Sambo Johnson formed the Mineral Industrial Development Corporation, which helped bring industry and medical services to Louisa County; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic and active member of his community, Sambo Johnson served as mayor of the Town of Mineral and as an invaluable member of the Louisa County Board of Supervisors and the Louisa County School Board; and

WHEREAS, Sambo Johnson served as a board member of the National Bank and Trust and as president of the Lake Anna Land Corporation and was one of the first land developers on Lake Anna; and

WHEREAS, always ready to help his neighbors and his community, Sambo Johnson participated in many civic organizations over the years, serving as a charter member of the Louisa County Junior Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Mineral Historical Society, Louisa County Rescue Squad, Mineral Masonic Lodge, and American Legion; and a volunteer for the Mineral Volunteer Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, Sambo Johnson was a faithful member of the Church of the Incarnation in Mineral, where he served as a trustee, senior warden, and member of the vestry; and

WHEREAS, a loving family man and a great friend to all who knew him well, Sambo Johnson will be fondly remembered for his dedication to his community and will be greatly missed by his devoted wife Sally Waldrop Johnson; his daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Lloyd Holbert; his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his numerous friends and fellow citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of an outstanding community leader and fine Virginian, Albert G. Johnson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Albert G. Johnson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
