Celebrating the life of Clarence Wesley Harris.

WHEREAS, Clarence Wesley Harris of Newport News, a respected citizen and an avid community supporter and activist, died on February 2, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Salters Creek in Newport News, Clarence “Sing” Harris was born on December 29, 1935, the loving son of the late Pearl and Marcus Harris and the beloved brother to five sisters and two brothers; and

WHEREAS, a successful entrepreneur and mentor to other area business owners, Sing Harris was committed to the economic development and revitalization of Salters Creek and the East End of Newport News; and

WHEREAS, a pillar of the Salters Creek community, Sing Harris was knowledgeable about public issues and was actively involved in political affairs on the local and state levels; and

WHEREAS, Sing Harris was always willing to help his fellow citizens in need, and he continually worked for a safer and more prosperous community; and

WHEREAS, an inspiration to all who knew him well, Sing Harris will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by his devoted wife of 43 years, Una Harris of Newport News; his sons, Clarence Harris, Jr., Linwood Harris, Gregory Harris, and Anthony Harris, and two daughters, Dr. Debra Harris Chinnery and Laurie Harris Terry, and their spouses; his six grandchildren; and his many other family and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine community supporter and outstanding Virginian, Clarence Wesley Harris; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Clarence Wesley Harris as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
