2009 SESSION
099013204WHEREAS, the Hickory High School softball team capped a perfect 20–0 regular season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AAA state softball championship on June 7, 2008; and
WHEREAS, on their way to the state title, the Hickory Hawks were the Southeastern District Champions and runners-up in the Southeastern District Tournament; they then went on to capture the Eastern Region championship title; and
WHEREAS, in the state tournament held at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Hickory High School defeated Herndon, Deep Run, and Battlefield High Schools to take home the state title, the first in any sport in Hickory High School history; and
WHEREAS, the hard work and commitment of the Hickory High School softball team paid off with an outstanding season, allowing only 15 runs all season; and
WHEREAS, the Hickory High School softball team also received national recognition as the 15th-ranked team in the nation according to USA Today; and
WHEREAS, all of the team members are to be commended on not just their spectacular season but also on their commitment to academic excellence; the average GPA for the team was 3.808, with nine of the 16 players earning a 4.0 or better GPA; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Hickory High School softball team is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Ryan Wieck; and the support of the students, faculty, and administration of Hickory High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Hickory High School Hawks on their outstanding 2008 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Ryan Wieck as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the championship performance of the Hickory High School softball team.
