WHEREAS, Mark Russell Smith has led the Richmond Symphony to new heights during his 10-year tenure as its dynamic music director; and

WHEREAS, Mark Russell Smith came to the Richmond Symphony with a wealth of experience from his time as the associate conductor of the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, and music director of the Springfield (Massachusetts) Symphony; and

WHEREAS, beloved by audiences and musicians alike, Mark Russell Smith has brought prestige to the Richmond Symphony and Virginia with his innovative and approachable programming; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to broadening the reach of classical music, Mark Russell Smith has played an integral role in educating children in Central Virginia, conducting programs that annually reach more than 35,000 children in the area; and

WHEREAS, Mark Russell Smith has helped to establish the Richmond Symphony’s growing national and international reputation; and

WHEREAS, Mark Russell Smith has been a leader in the community and a champion of music; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Mark Russell Smith on the occasion of his 10th and final year as the Richmond Symphony’s music director; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mark Russell Smith as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his enthusiastic commitment to music.
