SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 427
Celebrating the life of Alvin P. Anderson.

WHEREAS, Alvin P. Anderson, a well-respected lawyer and community leader, died on November 28, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a longtime resident of Williamsburg, Alvin P. Anderson graduated from The College of William and Mary in 1970 as an ROTC distinguished military graduate and accepted a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, Alvin P. Anderson continued his education at The College of William and Mary where he earned his juris doctorate from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law in 1972 and his practice concentrated on estate and land use cases; and

WHEREAS, serving as the managing partner of Kaufman & Canoles, P.C., until January 2008, Alvin P. Anderson was also the commissioner in chancery for the Circuit Courts of the City of Williamsburg and County of James City, and the Counties of New Kent, Charles City, King William, and King and Queen; special master in York County since 1975; and commissioner of accounts for the Circuit Court of the City of Williamsburg and County of James City since 1988; and

WHEREAS, Alvin P. Anderson continued to serve his alma mater as president of the William & Mary Alumni Society, as a member of the Marshall-Wythe Law School Foundation Board, and sat on the College’s Board of Visitors; and

WHEREAS, in 1998, Alvin P. Anderson received the Alumni Medallion, the highest honor bestowed by the William & Mary Alumni Association, for his unwavering service and loyalty; and

WHEREAS, a truly engaged citizen, Alvin P. Anderson sat on Riverside Health System’s Board, the Hampton Roads, Peninsula, and Williamsburg Boards of TowneBank, and the Board of Trustees for Hampton Roads Academy; and

WHEREAS, Alvin P. Anderson will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his wife, Betsy; his two daughters, Mary Beth and Sara; and many other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a fine Virginian, Alvin P. Anderson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Alvin P. Anderson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
