Celebrating the life of Ernest Eugene Saulmon.

WHEREAS, Ernest Eugene Saulmon, an esteemed veterinarian and former chairman of the Arlington County School Board, died on March 25, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Ernest Saulmon graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in veterinary medicine and married the love of his life, Catharine; and

WHEREAS, Ernest Saulmon joined the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Bureau of Animal Husbandry in Kentucky and traveled around the world through his work with the USDA, including to Mexico as part of a team that helped the country stop the spread of foot-and-mouth disease; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and gifted administrator, Ernest Saulmon settled in Arlington in 1956 where he continued his 38-year career with the USDA, including service as deputy director of science and education, deputy administrator for veterinary services, and director of the Animal Health Division; and

WHEREAS, committed to his profession, Ernest Saulmon served as a member of the District of Columbia Veterinary Medicine Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the United States Animal Health Association, the science committees of the Pan-American Health Organization’s Zoonoses Center and Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center, and NASA’s Apollo Lunar Quarantine Operations Team; and

WHEREAS, mindful of the needs of his community, Ernest Saulmon served as chairman of the Arlington County School Board; helped create the Arlington Career Center; was chairman of the board and original member of the Arlington Outdoor Education Association; and served as board chairman of the Arlington Chapter of the American Red Cross; and

WHEREAS, Ernest Saulmon was a longtime member of Clarendon United Methodist Church and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated father and husband, Ernest Saulmon will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife of 68 years, Catharine; their children, Sally, Ernest, Susan, and Conchita and their families; and numerous relatives and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an admired veterinarian and public servant, Ernest Eugene Saulmon; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ernest Eugene Saulmon as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory, commitment to his profession, and service to Arlington County.
