096803348WHEREAS, John Adams, the superb seven-part miniseries that aired in 2008 on HBO, was filmed in Richmond, Powhatan, and Hanover Counties, and Colonial Williamsburg during the spring of 2007; and
WHEREAS, John Adams is based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough and produced by Playtone, a company owned and managed by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, in association with HBO; and
WHEREAS, the John Adams miniseries was the recipient of a grant from the Motion Picture Opportunity Fund and more than $80 million was spent on the project in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, 4,000 Virginia citizens worked on John Adams employed as crew members, extras, and support personnel; and
WHEREAS, Playtone, HBO, and the crew of John Adams built colonial sets for the miniseries to portray scenes in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., as well as a colonial-era farm and wharf, which remain in Virginia for use by other film productions; and
WHEREAS, Virginia invested $1.25 million in the production of John Adams, which had a total positive economic impact of $146 million in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Film Office and the Virginia Tourism Corporation also did their part to help make John Adams a success; and
WHEREAS, John Adams was nominated for 23 and won 13 Emmy Awards, the most ever awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to a miniseries; and
WHEREAS, John Adams was nominated for four Golden Globe awards and won all four, which included Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television; Best Performances in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television; Paul Giamatti, Best Actor; Laura Linney, Best Actress; and Tom Wilkinson, Best Supporting Actor; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the crew of John Adams and all of the exemplary contributors to the miniseries for their outstanding achievement in bringing to television the life of John Adams and the drama and excitement of the founding of the United States; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Playtone and the crew of John Adams as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of their care and diligence in the making of a magnificent miniseries for all to enjoy.
