098771352WHEREAS, for over 40 years the National School Breakfast Program has contributed to the physical and academic development of Virginia’s students; and
WHEREAS, a school breakfast is often the only morning meal available to many children and, therefore, represents a vital part of the initiative to improve the education skills of students and prepare them for life; and
WHEREAS, the National School Breakfast Program is a relatively simple intervention that significantly improves children’s academic performance and psychological well-being; and
WHEREAS, studies show students participating in the National School Breakfast Program have improved attendance and punctuality, increased attention and memory recall, and improved math, reading, and standardized test scores; and
WHEREAS, research shows that children who have school breakfast eat more fruits, drink more milk, and consume less saturated fat than those who do not eat breakfast or have breakfast at home; and
WHEREAS, over 33 million school breakfasts are served in Virginia schools a year, and National School Breakfast Week is an excellent opportunity to recognize food service professionals, school officials, and parents for their dedicated efforts to provide healthy foods to America’s children; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to urge all Virginians to become aware and concerned about their children’s and their own nutrition to create a healthier citizenry now and in the future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly designate the week of the first Sunday in March, in 2009 and in each succeeding year, as National School Breakfast Week in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the President of the School Nutrition Association of Virginia, the Executive Director of the Virginia School Boards Association, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction, requesting that they further disseminate copies of this resolution to their respective constituents, so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the Senate post the designation of this week on the General Assembly’s website.
