WHEREAS, Henrico County adopted the county manager form of government in 1934, paving the way for the creation of the Henrico County Division of Police as it is today, with a chief of police and a county manager who perform the duties of director of public safety; and
WHEREAS, the Henrico County Division of Police had eight officers in 1934, all of whom used their own vehicles and whose only means of communication was the telephone; and
WHEREAS, today, the Henrico County Division of Police employs 200 civilian personnel and 581 sworn officers, utilizing state-of-the-art communications systems and vehicles provided by the county; and
WHEREAS, on April 26, 1987, the Henrico County Division of Police became one of only 47 agencies at the time to be nationally accredited by the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies; and
WHEREAS, the Henrico County Division of Police has maintained this accreditation and is currently one of only several agencies in the Commonwealth to hold both international and state accreditation; and
WHEREAS, as an internationally accredited law-enforcement agency widely known as a community-oriented police agency, the Henrico County Division of Police’s mission is to provide quality service to Henrico County citizens and the community through honor, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and accountability; and
WHEREAS, the Henrico County Division of Police’s current and former chiefs of police have significantly contributed, with the assistance and support of their staffs, to its reputation as one of the top law-enforcement agencies in the nation; and
WHEREAS, during 2009, the Henrico County Division of Police will be celebrating 75 years of modern policing under the county manager form of government; and
WHEREAS, the Henrico County Division of Police also will be remembering the eight Henrico County officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1934; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Henrico County Division of Police on the occasion of its 75th anniversary of modern policing; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Henrico County Division of Police as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its 75 years of outstanding public service and commitment to the citizens of Henrico County and the Commonwealth.
