2009 SESSION
WHEREAS, Duane Irving Preston of Ivor, a respected citizen, community supporter, and retired commander in the United States Coast Guard, died on September 5, 2008; and
WHEREAS, Duane Irving Preston was born on January 30, 1943, in Seattle, Washington, the second of seven children of the late Warrant Officer Roy W. Preston and Dorothy H. Preston; and
WHEREAS, Duane Preston served honorably in the United States Coast Guard for more than 26 years until his retirement in 1987, serving as commander at various duty stations and as captain on several Coast Guard cutters; and
WHEREAS, Commander Preston loved his job and being at sea, and during the course of his distinguished career with the Coast Guard, he and his family lived and served in many ports from coast to coast; and
WHEREAS, Duane Preston also worked for Moran Tug and Towing doing what he loved best, driving boats, and he retired from the company in 2004; and
WHEREAS, a knowledgeable sportsman, Duane Preston was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he shared his sporting expertise and respect for nature with younger generations at 4-H camps and Ducks Unlimited exhibitions; and
WHEREAS, Duane Preston gave his time, talent, and resources to many community organizations and events, and he was a great supporter of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and its numerous projects, and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association; and
WHEREAS, Duane Preston enjoyed exploring history and described himself as an “armchair archeologist,” and he was an enthusiastic member and supporter of the Archeology Society of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, a kind and loving family man, Duane Preston will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his devoted wife of 41 years, Teresa Preston; his sons, Dan and David Preston; his brothers and sisters and their families; and his numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Duane Irving Preston; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Duane Irving Preston as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
