SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 355
Commending Luca Paschina.

WHEREAS, Luca Paschina, the general manager of Barboursville Vineyards and Palladio Restaurant in Orange County, is recognized for his many contributions to winemaking in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, a third generation winemaker, Luca Paschina was born in Torino, Italy, and graduated from the Institute Umberto Primo in Alba, Italy, in 1983 with a degree in oenology; and

WHEREAS, after extensive experience as a winemaker in Italy, Switzerland, and the Napa Valley, Luca Paschina became the winemaker and manager in 1991 of all of the operations at Barboursville Vineyards, an estate winery, vineyards, and restaurant located on 830 acres of rolling hills near the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains; and

WHEREAS, Luca Paschina has been inspired by his own Italian winemaking roots, as well as Thomas Jefferson’s love of wine and viticulture attempts at Monticello in Virginia; the mansion at Barboursville Vineyards is now in ruins from a fire, but it was designed by Jefferson for his friend, Virginia Governor James Barbour; and

WHEREAS, through Luca Paschina’s creative vision and progressive leadership, the Barboursville Vineyards, founded by the Gianni Zonin family in the 1970s, has grown and prospered into a world renowned vineyard, producing more than 28,000 cases of fine wines annually; and

WHEREAS, Barboursville Vineyards has produced many award-winning European wine varietals, but Luca Paschina is especially proud of Octagon, a red wine that has won 20 gold medals, including the gold medal of the Monticello Winegrowers Competition in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Luca Paschina is a longtime member of the Virginia Wine Board, served as vice president of the Virginia Wineries Association from 1994 to 1996, and was honored as Orange County Business Person of the Year in 2001 and Virginia Wine Person of the Year in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Luca Paschina is a respected leader in the wine industry, and his many contributions to viticulture in Central Virginia and the Commonwealth have helped Virginia become a great wine producer and a top wine travel destination; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Luca Paschina for his many contributions to winemaking and the Virginia wine industry; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Luca Paschina as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his dedication to producing high quality Virginia wine.
