Celebrating the life of David Ferl Deel.

WHEREAS, David Ferl Deel of Bassett, a respected citizen and an outstanding educator and high school coach, died on December 10, 2008; and

WHEREAS, David Deel was born on March 2, 1934, in Dickenson County, the son of the late Richard D. and Ida Mae Clevinger Deel, graduated from Emory and Henry College, and received a master’s degree in physics from the University of Northern Iowa; and

WHEREAS, after moving to Henry County, David Deel taught math, physics, and chemistry, as well as coached the football team and the girls’ and boys’ track teams at the former Fieldale-Collinsville High School for many years; and

WHEREAS, an exceptional coach and mentor, David Deel was honored with the coveted Walt Cormack Award, which is given for outstanding achievement as a track coach in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, David Deel was dedicated to quality education, and he inspired his students to learn through his “intelligence and excellence, patience, hard work, and a genuine desire to see young people excel”; and

WHEREAS, David Deel gave generously of his time and expertise to many civic and professional organizations over the years, including as president of the Fieldale Lions Club, treasurer of the Henry County Education Association, and member of the Virginia Education Association and the Virginia High School League Coaches Association; and

WHEREAS, always willing to help his neighbors in any way he could, David Deel was a faithful member of the Fieldale United Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the church board, a Sunday School teacher, president of the Methodist Men, director of youth activities, as well as active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, David Deel will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and his community and greatly missed by his wife, Mary Louise Deel; his daughter, Geneva Deel Lawrence, and son, David Andrew “Andy’’ Deel; and his numerous other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of an outstanding educator and fine Virginian, David Ferl Deel; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of David Ferl Deel as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
