WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2009 as the leading professional association for Virginia Certified Public Accountants; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants was founded on October 6, 1909, with 19 charter members and now represents more than 8,300 certified public accountants (CPAs) working in private businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and public accounting firms of all sizes; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants has 10 chapters across the Commonwealth that offer networking, education, and opportunities to get involved in local communities; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants aims to enhance the success of CPAs by serving as a central source of information for its members; offering professional education programs; representing CPAs before state and federal regulators and legislators; and promoting the image of the CPA with the general public, media, legislators, educators, and students; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants has an award-winning Financial Fitness Initiative and other community outreach programs in which thousands of licensed CPAs provide pro bono services to educate and assist the public on personal finance and money management issues; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants formed the CPA Political Action Committee of Virginia in 1981 to raise funds and financially assist political candidates and legislators who support interests of the CPA profession; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants created an Educational Foundation in 1984 to attract future CPAs and promote accounting careers to Virginia students through undergraduate and graduate scholarships, financial literacy grants, and other awards and recognition programs; and

WHEREAS, CPAs play a unique and vital role in the success and growth of business, the soundness of government operations, the excellence of higher education, and the protection and confidence of investors in the Commonwealth of Virginia and throughout the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia General Assembly passed the Accountancy Bill in 1910, introduced by the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, to form the regulatory body called the Virginia Board of Accountancy to oversee the examination and certification of accountants in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants has a long and rich history, with remarkable growth and success since 1909, and continues to enrich the lives of CPAs and the citizenry of the Commonwealth through innovation, advocacy, and professional services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the organization’s commitment to its members and the citizens of Virginia and best wishes for continued success in the future.
